AED and Defibrillator Battery Maintenance: Readiness Before Runtime

For an AED or defibrillator, the most important battery question is not “How long did it run last time?” It is “Does the exact device show ready status now, and has every manufacturer-required self-test, inspection, and replacement action been completed?”

Emergency-device boundary

Never leave an AED or defibrillator in service with a failed readiness indicator, battery alarm, red status symbol, unexplained beep, damaged pack, or overdue consumable. Follow the exact manufacturer manual and the organization's emergency-equipment program.

Why calendar age and readiness both matter

Some AED batteries are primary (non-rechargeable); others are rechargeable smart packs. Some devices specify a replacement interval, while others rely on prompts, self-tests, remaining-runtime indicators, charger analysis, or a combination. The interval is specific to the exact battery, device software, storage conditions, and use history.

Do not transfer a generic “three-year” or “five-year” rule between models. ZOLL documentation, for example, gives model- and software-specific instructions and emphasizes replacing all specified cells together for applicable AED Plus configurations. Other AEDs use a sealed battery assembly with a different procedure.

Build the inspection around observable evidence

The indicator is only useful when staff know what the correct state looks like. Put the exact model's pass/fail interpretation in the local inspection procedure. If a self-test fails, do not keep cycling power in the hope the indicator clears; use the manufacturer's troubleshooting path and remove the unit from service when directed.

Replacing an AED battery

Use only the battery type specified for the exact AED model and revision. Before removal, confirm an alternative ready AED is available when coverage is required. Power the device off, open the intended battery compartment, and follow the sequence in the current operator or administrator guide.

For systems using multiple primary cells, replace the complete set when the manual requires it. Do not mix old and new cells, manufacturers, chemistries, or date codes. Observe polarity and seating. For a sealed assembly, align the rails and contacts without forcing the pack or pressing it against vulnerable pins.

Some devices require a battery reset action within a specific time or perform an automatic self-test after insertion. Follow that exact prompt. A reset falsely applied to a partly used battery can make the usage estimate misleading.

Post-replacement readiness check

  1. Allow the device to complete the battery-insertion sequence or self-test.
  2. Confirm the correct ready message, audible prompt, or green status symbol described in the manual.
  3. Verify the electrode cable and accessories are restored exactly as required.
  4. Turn the unit off or return it to standby as directed.
  5. Wait for the manual-specified interval and recheck the external readiness indicator.
  6. Record the battery identity, manufacturing/use-by information, installation date, and self-test result.

Rechargeable defibrillator packs need a system

Rechargeable defibrillator/monitor batteries may work with an analyzer or smart charger that records use, tests capacity, or performs calibration. Follow the charger indications and required test cycle rather than judging a pack only by terminal voltage. Rotate charged packs according to the organization's policy and preserve traceability between pack, charger result, and device.

Readiness is a chain, not a green light

A ready indicator is the last link in a chain that includes the correct battery, usable pads, intact accessories, a completed self-test and a device stored in its specified environment. A green symbol cannot tell you that a sealed pad package has been opened, that a pediatric key is missing, or that the unit was returned to its cabinet after an impact. Those checks still belong on the inspection round.

The reverse is also true: a red symbol should not be reduced to “needs a battery” until the device says so. Pad connection, internal electronics, temperature, previous use or another failed self-test can produce a not-ready state. Record the indicator and any audible or screen message before changing anything, then follow the exact troubleshooting table.

What a monthly AED log should capture

A useful log lets a coordinator prove both the finding and the response. For example: “Lobby AED, serial ending 1842; green check visible; no beep; case dry and sealed; adult pads expire 2027-02; spare pads expire 2027-05; battery installed 2025-11-14; inspection 2026-07-28 by ML.” If the indicator is not ready, record where the replacement device came from and who owns the corrective action.

  • Pad type, seal condition and expiration date
  • Battery identity, install-by/use-by information and installation date
  • Cabinet, alarm, rescue kit and accessory condition
  • Corrective action, temporary coverage, owner and closure date

After a rescue or an unexpected activation

Treat use of the AED as an event, not an ordinary monthly check. Follow the program's post-event process for clinical handoff, event-data preservation, cleaning, pad replacement, battery assessment and restocking. Some batteries consume meaningful capacity during a rescue and subsequent data transfer; others provide a remaining-capacity indication. The manual—not the calendar alone—determines whether the battery can return to standby service.

For rechargeable defibrillator packs, keep the charger or analyzer result with the pack record. Terminal voltage and a “charged” lamp do not show whether the battery can deliver the required load. If the supported test reports capacity or service life below its limit, quarantine the pack even if it appears to charge normally.

Questions from AED program coordinators

Should an AED battery be replaced by the printed date or by an alarm?

Use the manufacturer's current rule for the exact battery and AED. Some products have an install-by date plus an in-device service life; others depend on status indications, self-tests, usage, and environmental limits. Do not wait for a readiness failure when the instructions specify scheduled replacement, and do not invent a universal calendar interval across brands.

Can equivalent-size consumer cells be substituted?

Only if the AED instructions explicitly identify that exact cell type and configuration. Similar size or voltage does not prove pulse capability, shelf life, temperature performance, leakage resistance, or compatibility with the device's self-test algorithm. Proprietary battery packs should not be opened or fitted with substitute cells outside an authorized service process.

Is a green readiness indicator enough after replacement?

It is essential evidence, but the complete return-to-service check may also include correct installation, an automatic or manual self-test, accessory condition, pad expiry, event-memory status, physical inspection, and a recorded replacement date. Follow the operator or service guide, because an AED is a system and battery readiness cannot be evaluated in isolation.
