An infusion pump battery supports transport and continuity during power transitions, but battery replacement is not complete when the pump simply turns on. Compatibility, charging behavior, battery alarms, configuration, functional checks, and the manufacturer's post-maintenance procedure all matter.

Remove the pump from clinical use

Never replace or test the battery while a pump is delivering therapy. Transfer therapy using the clinical procedure, quarantine the pump for service, and follow the current manual for the exact model and software configuration.

Start with the failure evidence

Record the reported symptom before replacing parts: short runtime, no charging indicator, unexpected low-battery alarm, shutdown during transport, battery not detected, physical damage, or a scheduled age-based replacement. Confirm whether the problem follows the battery, the charger/AC supply, or the pump under the approved troubleshooting process.

A physically damaged pack deserves immediate escalation. General replacement sequence

  1. Remove the pump from use, clear or protect data according to policy, and perform the documented shutdown.
  2. Disconnect AC power, external communications, tubing, and accessories as directed.
  3. Open only the designated battery access. Use ESD controls when the service manual requires them.
  4. Release the battery retainer and connector without pulling wires or contacting exposed terminals with tools.
  5. Inspect the bay, cable, contacts, insulation, door, and latch for liquid, corrosion, debris, heat, or mechanical damage.
  6. Compare the old and new batteries at the label and interface level. Stop on any conflict.
  7. Install and route the replacement without pinching, stretching, or modifying wiring. Refit every fastener and cover.

Charging is part of commissioning

Use the specified power supply and charging state. Some pumps charge whenever connected to AC; others charge most effectively when off. Observe the charge indication and temperature. Do not use a generic charger simply because a plug fits.

When the required charge is complete, verify the device recognizes the battery and displays a plausible state. If the manual requires a battery-learning, conditioning, or calibration cycle, perform it only in the specified service state and never while the pump is assigned to a patient.

Post-service testing

The return-to-service procedure should come from the exact pump manual and the facility's maintenance program. Depending on the pump, it may include startup self-test, display and keypad checks, audible/visual alarms, door and latch inspection, upstream/downstream occlusion tests, air-in-line test, flow accuracy, bolus function, battery alarm timing, AC-to-battery transfer, electrical safety, and configuration verification.

What to document

Record the pump asset and serial identifiers, exact battery identifiers, installation reason, date, charge result, alarm and power-transition results, full operational checkout, discarded-battery disposition, and technician. If a group of packs shows the same early failure or physical damage, escalate through quality and recall surveillance rather than treating each as routine wear.

Should the pack be fully discharged to calibrate it?

Do not deep-discharge a pump battery unless the current manufacturer procedure explicitly calls for a controlled conditioning or calibration cycle. Unnecessary deep discharge adds wear and can leave equipment unavailable. Any intentional runtime test must be done off-patient with a defined endpoint, alternative equipment, observation, and acceptance criteria.

Why might a new infusion pump battery not be recognized?

Possible causes include an incorrect pack revision, mismatched communication electronics, a connector that is not fully seated, damaged contacts, temperature outside the charge range, a charger or internal power fault, or a required service reset. Record the exact message and stop if recognition or alarm behavior does not match the manual.

Can clinical staff replace an infusion pump battery?

That depends on the device design, labeling, facility policy, and service documentation. A user-accessible pack may have an operator procedure, while an internal battery can require trained biomedical personnel, electrical safety checks, software tools, or seals. The pump should never be opened or serviced while connected to a patient.

Is a short bench runtime check enough?

A brief battery-only check confirms transfer and basic operation, but it may not demonstrate usable capacity through the required clinical duty cycle. Use the manufacturer-supported runtime or capacity test and its acceptance threshold. Keep the pump off-patient, account for display, alarm, communication, and pumping loads, and record test conditions so later results are comparable.
